Recently, a common question at the library has been, "I want to contact my representative. How can I find out who they are and how to reach them?" In this blog, Rachel will guide you on identifying your federal and state elected officials and how to get in touch with them.
How To: Identify My Elected Government Officials
at the Federal and State Level
The first step in this process is to determine who your government officials are. This can be easily accomplished by entering your address into the Illinois State Board of Elections District Locator. In the search bar located in the upper left corner, enter your address. Here, I have used the Vespasian Warner Library address. After searching your address, the "Elected Officials" slider on the right will show the elected officials for your location, including: President, Vice President, United States Senators, United States Congressperson, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Comptroller, State Treasurer, State Senator, State Representative, and the Judicial District for your address.

Now that you have identified your elected officials, how do you contact them?

One Final Note
Although I intended to include information about local governments such as the DeWitt County Board, Township, District, and Town/Village boards, much of this information might change following the consolidated election on April 1st. Therefore, next month we will explore how to determine your township and district and how to contact your local elected officials.
Not sure what will appear on your ballot for the April 1st consolidated election? You can access a DeWitt County sample specimen ballot, district voting map, and polling locations on the DeWitt County Government Website. You can also use Ballotpedia to enter your address and discover every candidate that will appear on your ballot. After the election is over, you can find election results on the DeWitt County website.
