What will Trevor pick?

Trevor - Maintenance Assistant

Trevor, who has a passion for history, was thrilled to receive the historical category for our game "This or That." He was eager to showcase the Roman scientist and writer Pliny the Elder, particularly his book Natural History. Although this piece is not part of our physical collection, we were delighted to discover it in our digital archives. Here is your summary!

"Natural History by Pliny the Elder included diverse topics such as astronomy, zoology, botany, and medicine. Predominant philosophical beliefs at the time influenced Pliny, such as pantheism and stoic philosophy. Pliny's Natural History was compiled from large numbers of other, primarily Greek, sources."

Got time for a whole series?

April – Circulation Clerk

April got what I thought would be a tricky one, but she knew exactly what she wanted for her "This or That" series category! While getting your hands on the high sought-after Housemaid Series by Freida McFadden might be hard to do, April feels that it is completely worth the wait, even if you need to place a hold on it! Here is a brief summery of the first book in the series, The Housemaid by Freida McFadden.

Photo of the book The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

“Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But soon she finds out - and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late. But I reassure myself that the Winchesters don't know who I really am. And they don't know what I'm capable of.”

"The broad narrative of Hitchhiker follows the misadventures of the last surviving man, Arthur Dent, following the demolition of the Earth by a Vogon constructor fleet to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Dent is rescued from Earth's destruction by Ford Prefect—a human-like alien writer for the eccentric, electronic travel guide The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy—by hitchhiking onto a passing Vogon spacecraft. Following his rescue, Dent explores the galaxy with Prefect and encounters Trillian, another human who had been taken from Earth (before its destruction) by the self-centered President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox and the depressed Marvin the Paranoid Android."

Emily – Adult Program Coordinator

Emily selected Steel Magnolias and prepared a box of tissues for her choice in the "This or That" drama category. Sharing this movie experience with her Granny for the first time created cherished memories for Emily. Despite the emotional journey that may require several tissues, Emily considers this film a heartwarming and uplifting story that evokes both laughter and tears. See the movie summary below.

Card A or Card B?

It's my turn now! I selected the inspirational category for "This or That". It was a simple choice for me. I really loved the Fairlawn series by Angela Hunt. Starting with the initial book in the series, Doesn't She Look Natural, this book was wonderfully crafted and encouraged a new perspective when facing unexpected situations. Delve into this short summary.
